This is a an extensive beginner guide to colors with a focus on anime and manga. If you don’t know much (or maybe nothing at all) about the color wheel or different color combinations then this is a must read. These are the same principals used by professional artists, designers and animators.

The colors of anime and manga characters or even entire scenes are not chosen at random. Certain colors go better together then others.

Please note that while the color wheel used in this tutorial is probably the most common example, color wheels can have far more divisions then this or even a smooth gradient transition from one color to another.

How To Draw Anime Very Easy

There are three primary colors, red, blue and yellow. The main defining characteristic of primary colors is that they cannot be created by mixing other colors.

Secondary colors are created by mixing two of the primary colors. For example you can mix red and yellow to get orange or blue and yellow to get green.

Tertiary colors are a combination of a primary color and a secondary color. So if for example you mix yellow and green you will get a yellow-green color.

Here’s a quick and easy way to draw closed eyes for beginners. I came up with this method by combining a few of my other ones, which turned out very well. You guys have been requesting me to draw a pair of opened eyes for a while now. So I’m going to work on that one next!

Note: Up until step 6, use only an HB pencil with very light pressure so that your guidelines and mistakes don’t show through in your final artwork. Drawing lightly is also better for erasing. In the examples below, I’m using more pressure so you can clearly see what I’m doing.

Then measure the first space and multiply it by 3. You should now end up with 3 equal spaces going across your sketchbook horizontally.

Determine the angle you want the eyes to slant and draw a line through each circle, making sure the angles are similar. Watch the video for a tip on how you can do this.

Before you shade, make sure the guidelines you drew from step 1-3 are only slightly visible. You can use your kneaded eraser to roll a layer of graphite off those areas.

If you want to draw details like dark under eye circles, you can use the circles as a guide. Watch the video for an example.

Here, I switched to my 4B 0.5mm lead. Starting at the lower part of each eyebrow, draw upward strokes. Make sure to lift your pencil up at the end of every stroke to make the hairs look more realistic. For a super detailed tutorial on this, check out this tutorial.

How To Draw Eyes

This step is very subtle, but also very important. Use an HB pencil to shade directly underneath each eyebrow. Make sure the transition is gradual. Now the eyebrows look like they belong, instead of just pasted onto the skin.

This one’s more of a crease than a wrinkle. When the eyes open, a crease forms on the eyelid. Use an H pencil and the lightest amount of pressure to draw two creases. The darker you draw them, the deeper they will appear.

Draw a row of curved diagonal lines along the edge of each eyelid. This area of the skin is very thin – wrinkling up when the skin is tugged. You’ll want to use an H pencil for this as well.

Depending on where the light is coming from in your drawing, blend the opposite side of each diagonal line drawn. For example: in this drawing, the light is coming from the top, so the side of each wrinkle that faces the light will be left alone, while the side facing away from the light will need to be blended.

Unless you’re drawing this on a large scale, avoid using a blending stump because the tip will not be thin enough for this job. Instead, use an H and HB pencil to create a nice gradient along each wrinkle.

Using a kneaded eraser, go over areas of each wrinkle that are facing the light and dab it gently with the pinched end of your kneaded eraser to lift a thin line of graphite. The highlights should appear brighter and the wrinkles should become more apparent and shapely.

To start, draw 3 eyelashes for each eye. One on the far left, far right and another in the middle. The lashes should fan out, angling away from each other.

If you want to be really careful, draw the eyelashes lightly with an H or HB pencil to start. Once you’re okay with the placement, curvature and length, etc… go over it with a darker pencil like a 4B. Here, I used a 0.5mm 4B lead.

It’s okay that some eyelashes touch. It’s actually more natural looking when they form triangle shapes or even cross over each other.

Finally, use an HB or 2B pencil to shade directly under the top eyelid to create a light cast shadow coming from the eyelashes.

This hack uses a VIKA BLECKET table top, two VIKA ARTUR trestles, four EKBY STILIG shelf brackets, some wooden pegs, nuts and bolts, a power drill, some thick double sided tape, and my Dad.

The motivation behind this IKEAHack was the need to keep coffee cups from falling off my drawing table. My table is a set of VIKA ARTUR trestles and a VIKA BLECKET drawing table top – they’ve been set up at an angle for drawing and design work. Since I work both on paper and digitally, my graphic tablet and keyboard are also on this table, but can be moved out of the way easily for more space. I mounted my monitor on a wall bracket to keep it off the table so that I could angle the table without moving the monitor.

Now here’s the problem – the VIKA ARTUR trestles, while very aesthetically pleasing and ‘drawing-desk-y’, are a pain in the posterior to adjust. Changing the angle of the table involves loosening the 4 thumb screws that hold the upper section of the trestles in place, popping out the 4 pegs that support it, changing the angle of the table (on both trestles) and then putting back the pegs and tightening the screws. As you might imagine, I just kept the table angled all the time – and kept replacing my coffee cups as they fell off one by one.

Then my dad dropped by and decided that the injustices being visited upon the coffee cup populace were completely unjustified and needed to be addressed – and during one of those IKEA trips where you buy a ton of unnecessary stuff, he picked up four EKBY STILIG shelf brackets. These, he claimed, would make adjusting my table much less of a chore, enabling me to use it as a drawing surface as well as, you know, something to just keep stuff on. I was skeptical, but intrigued.

First he attached two of the brackets, short sides together to form what would become a support for one of the trestle shelves to rotate on. The holes were already there for a bolt and nut, but since the bolt we used was a little wide and short, he had to widen the hole and countersink it a bit. 

Next, we needed to put a peg through the new support, to rest on the trestle and rotate around. We used the handle off a wooden skewer, but you could just as easily use two of the pegs off the ARTUR trestle itself – you’ll only need two of them in the final product anyway.

Making sure the two EKBY STILIGS were tightly held together, we drilled a hole for the peg to fit in. It doesn’t have to be the exact same diameter – a little loose is fine – just make sure the two halves don’t move while drilling or the hole will end up ragged.

After that, some strategically placed thick double sided tape was added to make sure the trestle shelves didn’t slide around, and the supports were ready to be put in place.

And that’s pretty much it – now I can keep all the screws relatively loose, and pop out the pegs any time I want to rotate the table.Explore your creativity like a professional artist.
